Trauma

Trauma is the most common cause of tongue bleeding.

Bleeding can happen if youbite your tongueor even brush or scrape your tongue too aggressively.

You might even cut your tongue while opening a can or on braces or dentures.

Tongue bleeding can happen after a fall, a sports injury, or a car accident.

Luckily, your tongue usually stops bleeding after a bite, cut, or other trauma.

If you believe you have thrush, talk with a healthcare provider who will prescribe antifungal medications.

Rarely, tongue bleeding can be a symptom oforal herpes, which causes sores in the mouth.

Usually, oral herpes will cause other symptoms, including fever.

Vitamin B12 deficiency often results in other symptoms, such as fatigue and weakness.

When the blisters pop, they can cause bleeding.

Canker soresare a more common pop in of mouth sore.

They typically dont bleed but can if they become infected.

Cancer

A bleeding tongue can be a sign oforal cancer.

Usually, tongue bleeding will stop on its own.

you’re able to suck on ice or a Popsicle toreduce inflammationand apply gentle pressure to the bleeding.

They might need to stitch an injury or provide medication to treat an underlying condition like thrush.

They can also rule out serious causes of tongue bleeding, like cancer.

Although the tongue may bleed heavily, it usually heals well on its own.

However, tongue bleeding can also signify other conditions, including vitamin deficiency, infections, or cancer.
