Even though they may seem worrying, urethral caruncles are not cancer and rarely lead to health problems.
Healthcare providers check to ensure the lump isnt something more serious before deciding on treatment.
With the right care, most people with a urethral caruncle can live normally without any issues.
The lump is usually soft and round, resembling a tiny raspberry or polyp.
They typically measure less than 1 centimeter, though larger caruncles have been reported.
Most urethral caruncles do not cause symptoms.
Like in females, they can sometimes bleed, swell, or become painful.
They may also cause hematuria or difficulty urinating.
Diagnosis
Most urethral caruncles are discovered during routine physical exams.
In most cases, a healthcare provider diagnoses a urethral caruncle with a physical exam.
If there’s any uncertainty or concern about other conditions, they may perform a biopsy or other tests.
However, complete resolution can take up to six months.
Stopping estrogen therapy may cause the caruncle to grow back.
Prevention
Preventing a urethral caruncle isnt always possible since these growths often result from natural hormonal changes.
Effective treatments can help you feel more comfortable and may also lower the risk of developing a caruncle.
Prognosis
Since urethral caruncles are benign, the overall prognosis is good.
Many cause no symptoms and dont require treatment.
With proper care, most people find relief and experience no serious complications.
Physical examination and biopsy of the lesion help with diagnosis.
Treatment options for urethral caruncles range from warm sitz baths to topical estrogen and surgical removal.
