Primary adrenal insufficiency is tied to a lack of cortisol being created by the adrenal glands.
Symptoms of Addisons disease may include:
The causes of a cortisol insufficiency or surplus are uncommon.
Risks would be the same for any other jot down of blood test.
It may be recommended to rest prior to the blood draw because cortisol levels can be increased with stress.
Timing
A cortisol blood test should not take long, usually only a few minutes.
However, because cortisol levels change throughout the day, two different blood draws may be needed.
The firstblood testshould be done in the morning when cortisol levels are higher.
Another blood draw should be done again in the late afternoon when cortisol levels are lower.
Location
Blood tests may be done at a hospital, a physicians office, or a laboratory.
At-home cortisol tests are also an option.
During the Test
A blood test is typically relatively quick and simple.
Patients are shown into either a private room or a semi-private area where the blood draw will take place.
A cotton ball and a bandage will be placed over the area after the test.
If bruising does happen, it usually only lasts a few days.
Check with a doctor about takingibuprofenor other non-steroidalanti-inflammatory medicationsbecause these drugs may increase bleeding.
For blood drawn in the afternoon, the reference range might be between 2 and 18 g/dL.
(To convert a cortisol level from g/dL to nmol/L, multiply by 27.59.)
Dietary changes may also be needed to add more salt, especially during hot weather or during heavy exercise.
Other therapies may also be necessary.
Dietary changes may also be recommended, such as reducing sodium and fat in the diet.
In most cases, Cushings syndrome can be cured.
A Word From Verywell
The cortisol level test is a fairly simple blood draw.
A diagnosis of Cushings syndrome or Addisons disease can bring a significant amount of change and stress.
In most cases, these conditions are very manageable.
