Avoid energy drinks with caffeine as they can promote urination, causing you to lose even more water.
Severe cases can lead to kidney failure, seizures, and death.
Giant Cell Arteritis
Giant cell arteritis is triggered by inflammation of the arteries in the temples.
This results in the blood vessels becoming blocked and blood flow being interrupted, leading to a throbbing headache.
Prednisone is only used for short-term relief.
During severe episodes, between 40 and 60 milligrams may be prescribed for up to three weeks.
The dose would then need to be gradually tapered down to avoidwithdrawal symptoms.
When to See a Healthcare Provider
Most throbbing headaches are not serious.
However, in rare instances, a throbbing headache may be a sign of a severe medical condition.
An inflammatory vascular disease called giant cell arteritis can also cause a throbbing headache in older adults.
