While older adults are most commonly affected, the condition most often starts during childhood and progresses with age.
In excessive kyphosis, the spine curves forward, rounding the upper back.
In excessive lordosis, the spine curves backward, resulting in swayback.
Both conditions can be painful.
There are a variety of causes for each condition.
Diagnosis is through a physical exam, medical history, and imaging.
Treatment will depend on the cause and severity.
