For many people, tattoos are an important form of expression.

For most people, the healing process is uncomplicated.

However, having an autoimmune condition like RA may increase your risk of infection.

Some RA medications also can increase that risk after your tattoo session.

Theres no clear indication of whether the timing of DMARD injections can affect infection risk.

Corticosteroids, like prednisone, also may be used to treat RA.

They can have a negative impact on wound healing, as well.

Skin Reactions

Most people with RA dont have skin-related symptoms.

Skin reactions can happen to anyone, especially to people with sensitive skin.

Tattoos are known to be painful.

If youre experiencing a painful RA flare-up, you might not respond well to the pain of tattooing.

Another consideration is the amount of time you will need to remain still while the tattoo is being applied.

This can be difficult if youre struggling with chronic pain or stiffness due to RA.

That doesnt mean a tattoo is completely out of the question.

Talk to your tattoo artist about your condition.

Ask how long it will take to finish the procedure.

Inquire whether its possible to break up the tattooing into shorter sessionseven if the tattoo isnt large.

If you have safety questions relating to your RA, talk to your healthcare provider.
