Protein is taking over the internet and the grocery store.

One new item gaining popularity is protein water.

Protein water is simply water with added protein.

It can be made by mixing liquid or powder protein supplements with water or purchased pre-bottled.

Most packaged protein waters contain 60 to 90 calories and provide 15 to 20 grams of protein per serving.

They mostly come in fruity flavors and are often considered a lower-calorie alternative to protein shakes.

Some are marketed to athletes and gym goers, while others that contain collagen are marketed as beauty boosters.

What Are the Benefits of Protein Water?

That said, protein water shouldnt replace water or protein-rich foods in your diet.

Drinking enough water is essential for good health, but swapping plain water for protein water isnt necessary.

Does Protein Water Have Any Risks?

For most people, trying protein water doesnt carry much risk.

Trafficanda-Raynor recommends watching for added sugar and caffeine, too.

People with kidney disease should also consult their doctors before increasing their protein intake.

Do You Need Extra Protein?

Trafficanda-Raynor said protein-heavy foods are already staples of American diets.

So, is protein water worth a try?

Its really up to you, said Hunnes.

Try protein water as an extra, but dont rely on it.
