Sex drive changes with age across your life.

For some, sexual activity may begin in the teenage years or 20s.

There’s no universal “normal” when it comes to sex drive, either.

You may have symptoms or a health condition that requires diagnosis and treatment.

Research studies sometimes don’t use the terminology in this way.

These hormonal changes can lead to thoughts about sex long before someone is ready to have it.

Among teen females aged 15 to 19, 42% have had sex.

For males aged 15 to 19, that percentage was 44%.

Males and Females in Their 20s

Regardless of biological sex, testosteronelevels are high in your 20s.

Two people of the same age and background can have different desires for sex, and that’s okay.

For many females, this decade is when sex drive peaks.

This may be a function of the biological clock and reproductive priorities.

Fertility begins to decline by age 30, and the decline accelerates by your mid-30s.

Erectile dysfunction(ED) starts becoming more prevalent.

For females, perimenopause(the lead-up to menopause) typically starts somewhere in the 40s.

That means a decline inestrogen(female hormone) levels.

Lower estrogen can meanvaginal dryness, which can lead topainful intercourse.Testosterone tends to decline, too.

This can all lead to a lower sex drive.

Testosterone levels will drop to their lowest after menopause.

In their 50s, people may be takingmedicationsthat change their sex drive.

Some researchers note that sexual desire, activity, and function remain strong during your 50s.

And they all contribute to a continued decline in sexual drive and activity.

However, that doesn’t mean you should expect to stophaving sex as you get older.

Research suggests that people in their 60s and beyond report active, fulfilling sex lives.

Rates were far lower in those without partners.

Another study reported that up to 40% of women over 60 had low sex drive.

Still, the women said sex was an important part of their lives.

A 2020 study reported several factors that contribute to a declining libido in females after age 60.

When Does Sexual Activity End?

Many people can continue sexual activity for as long as they would like.

Both males and females report being sexually active in their 70s and 80s, and even into their 90s.

Older adults often report that they prefer adaptive styles of sex that go beyond penetration.

you’re able to do several things to boost it.

First, talk to your healthcare provider to see if it’s a natural change or diagnosable sexual dysfunction.

Depending on what they find, they may prescribe medication or help you find ways to correct it.

If it is just an age-related drop, you may have success with lifestyle changes.

The good news is that even small increases in physical activity may boost sex drive.

Studies also have linked obesity and inactivity with sexual dysfunction.

One study concluded that sexual behavior was directly linked to body fat percentage.

About 40% of them had problems with desire and 50% hadperformance problems.

In females, about 40% of women with obesity had lower libido.

Heart health and cardiovascular fitness predicted arousal.

Some research suggests regular, intense endurance training may decrease male sex drive.

However, some foods have a reputation for increasing your sex drive.

Many of them do this by improving blood circulation and others byincreasing energy.

That’s important for erections and also for female arousal.

Others may directly increase your libido or improve your mood by changing brain chemistry.

Avoid Libido-Lowering Foods

Some foods can reduce your sex drive and function.

Several of them lower testosterone levels, while others impair circulation.

A side benefit of avoiding saturated fat is that your overall health may improve.

And for some people, changes in body weight or shape can improve sexual desire.

Weight loss also can improve male fertility.

Manage Stress

Stress changes a lot about how your body functions.

Chronic stress increases levels of a hormone called cortisol, which can suppresssex hormonesand lower libido.

It can also negatively affect your mood and mental state.

That can also harm your sex drive by making it hard for you to get in the mood.

If you need help with stress relief, talk to your healthcare provider.

The first step is to take a look at your sleep hygieneyour habits surrounding bedtime and sleep.

To achieve better sleep, have a relaxing routine.

Avoid caffeine and alcohol before bed, and limit your screen time and exposure to bright light.

Getting it diagnosed and treated can make a big difference in how well you sleep.

Women tend to need more of an emotional connection than men.

There could be a medical reason.

However, it looks like it’s a short-term change.

Trans men, overall, returned to their previous levels of desire.

Summary

Male sex drive peaks in the 20s and then gradually declines with age.

Female sex drive grows as the fertile years pass, then declines with menopause.

There’s no set age when people stop being sexually active.

Talk with your healthcare provider about your sex life and what to expect.

Exploring your personal desires, both with and without a partner, is also important.
