Avulsion fractures can be confused with othertypes of fractures to the fifth metatarsal bone.
The most common problem is distinguishing this injury from aJones fracture.

Crutches are not usually needed for this injury, andsurgeryis seldom necessary.
Resting and icing the area are important during the recovery period.
In an open reduction surgery, your orthopedic surgeon will put the bone together after surgically exposing it.
In a closed reduction surgery, they will not surgically expose the bone to put it back into place.
