Hormone patchesthat are applied on the first day of the menstrual cycle start working immediately.
Patches use bothestrogenand progestin (as combined birth control pills do).
A patch is applied for one week at a time, then replaced with a new patch.
If it’s inserted after that, it takes seven days to become effective.
The vaginal ring is inserted into the vagina and slowly releases the hormones.
The ring is left in the body for three weeks and then taken out for one week.
The procedure is usually effective immediately.
About one in 200 people may still get pregnant after having the surgery.
Scheduling the surgery right after your period can help to avoid an already fertlized egg from reaching the uterus.
Condoms and Diaphragms
Condomsand diaphragms are immediately effective at preventing pregnancy when used correctly.
They are considered a barrier method of birth control because they physically prevent the sperm from reaching the egg.
They are only effective for about an hour after insertion, and should be reapplied before having sex again.
When spermicide is used correctly, it’s about 79% effective at preventing pregnancy.
