Stock trays are manufactured in bulk in a variety of shapes and sizes.
A dentist will then go for the closest-matching stock tray in size and shape for each individual patient.

Stone is poured into the hardened impression and when set a dental cast is produced.
This forms an almost exact replica of the mouth from which it has been molded.
