Overview
EoE is a chronic immune system condition, only recently identified by the medical community.
The esophagus is also called the gullet.
In some people, they may build up in the esophagus because of acid reflux.
About 50% of people with EoE also have seasonal allergies or asthma.
Symptoms
Children and adults may experience thesymptoms associated with EoEdifferently.
The test performed to diagnose EoE is called an upper endoscopy.
Biopsies taken from this procedure help confirm the presence of eosinophils.
The gold standard to diagnose this condition is with a biopsy from an EGD.
No other skin or blood tests are available right now to confirm EoE.
A biopsy involves taking a sample of your esophageal tissue from several locations (usually two to six).
Trigger foods must be removed from the diet on a long-term basis in order for symptoms to resolve.
Some of the most common foods allergens that trigger EoE aredairy,wheat,egg, andsoy.
Medications
Several medications may be used in the treatment of EoE.
Corticosteroids are effective in inducing and maintaining clinical and pathologic remission in EoE.
However, some are associated with significant adverse effects.
This procedure widens the esophagus and makes swallowing easier.
However, there are risks of esophageal tearing and perforation.
Dilation does not address the underlying inflammation.
