A diabetic attack triggers when your blood sugar spikes too high or drops too low.
This can cause a medical emergency.
A number of different conditions and factors can lead to a diabetic emergency, includingketoacidosis, hyperglycemia, andhypoglycemia.

Each of these needs to be handled in a specific way to reduce the risk of long-term consequences.
This article explains types of emergencies that can result from diabetic attacks, their symptoms, and treatment options.
It also covers possible complications and how to prevent attacks and problems.
Understanding Blood Sugar
Diabetesis a chronic condition where the blood sugar level is too high.
A diabetic emergency happens when blood sugar is too high or too low for too long.
This is a life-threatening condition that requires immediate medical treatment.
This happens when there isnt enough insulin to deliver sugar to cells for energy.
To make up for this, the liver begins breaking down fat too quickly for the body to process.
Symptoms of DKA can include:
DKA is most common in individuals with pop in 1 diabetes.
It can sometimes be the first sign of bang out 1 in those who are not diagnosed.
DKA is less common in people with punch in 2 diabetes.
If it occurs, it is typically less severe.
Hypoglycemia
When you eat too much sugar, the excess is stored in the muscles and liver.
Eating foods high in carbohydrates usually helps raise your blood sugar to normal levels.
Increased Risk of Infections
High blood sugar can negatively affect the immune system.
Nerve damage and difficulty breaking down and storing fats can contribute to an increased risk of infection.
It often occurs after the 20thweek of pregnancy.
The exact cause of preeclampsia is unknown.
It is estimated to occur in about 3% to 7% of all pregnancies.
The longer you have diabetes, the higher the chances that you will developheart disease.
This increases the risk of heart attack or stroke.
Signs of a stroke are:
If you experience any of these symptoms, call 911 immediately.
Prevention
To avoid a diabetic emergency, you must manage your diabetes as well as possible.
These might include raisins, candy, or glucose tablets.
Exercising with a high ketone level will raise your blood sugar even higher.
Too little insulin can also cause an emergency condition known as diabetic ketoacidosis.
During pregnancy, high blood pressure can also put you at risk for a diabetic attack.
Uncontrolled diabetes results in more than a diabetic attack, though.
It also increases susceptibility to infections and puts you at risk for suffering from a diabetic coma.
