What Are Klonopin and Xanax?

Klonopinand Xanax are Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved medications that are classified asbenzodiazepines.
Benzodiazepines are a class of medications that are used for anxiety,muscle spasms, and/orseizures.
Both drugs affect gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA).
GABA is an important chemical messenger in the brain.
Benzodiazepines slow nerve impulses in your brain, which can help you feel more relaxed.
Both drugs act in a similar way to reduce tension and manage panic attacks.
Both are intended to be used short term.
What Do Klonopin and Xanax Treat?
Klonopin is FDA-approved to:
Healthcare providers sometimes prescribe medications off-label.
This means prescribing a drug for a particular use that is not FDA-approved.
This makes it better suited for treating acute anxiety than chronic anxiety.
When stopping a benzodiazepine, the dosage will be gradually tapered to lower the risk of withdrawal reactions.
Dosage is individualized, and the healthcare provider will determine the best dosage based on various factors.
Here are some general dosing guidelines here.
However, some individuals may be prescribed one dose at bedtime rather than two daily doses.
A .25 to .5 mg dose of Klonopin is roughly equivalent to .5 mg dose of Xanax.
Call 911 if your symptoms feel life-threatening, or you think you have a medical emergency.
Some drugs may interact with Klonopin and Xanax.
Other drug interactions may occur with Klonopin or Xanax.
