Carpometacarpal (CMC) joint arthroplasty is a surgery to treatsevere arthritisin the thumb.

Doctors recommend it when other treatments, like braces orcortisone shots, no longer help with pain.

CMC joint anthroplasty helps reduce pain and makes it easier to grip and pinch objects.

A successful surgery can provide long-term pain relief and improve hand movement.

What Is the Average Age for CMC Arthroplasty?

The average age for CMC joint arthroplasty is 57 years.

Females are more likely than males to need this surgery.

How the Procedure Works

CMC join arthroplasty usually involves removing the trapezium (trapeziectomy).

In some cases the trapezium is left in some place.

The surgery is performed undergeneral anesthesia, so you may feel groggy upon waking.

Arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home.

In most cases, you’re able to go home the same day to begin recovery.

If the numbness lasts more than 24 hours, call your healthcare provider.

As the anesthesia wears off, you may start to feel some pain.

Your surgeon may prescribe narcoticpain medication, though many people get by fine with acetaminophen or ibuprofen.

You will likely be sent home in a thumb cast.

Expect to wear it for about a month, followed by a splint for another four to six weeks.

Gentle thumb movements may begin once your cast is taken off.

But in some cases, your thumb may remain immobilized for up to three months before starting therapy.

Full movement may take a few months to regain.

How Long Does Recovery Take?

The recovery time from carpometacarpal joint arthroplasty can vary.

However, it can take up to nine to 12 months to feel the full results.

Potential Risks

CMC joint arthroplasty generally leads to a successful recovery for most individuals.

Although it is highly effective at relieving pain and enhancing thumb mobility, full pinch strength is rarely restored.

The surgery is typically performed on an outpatient basis, and you will go home the same day.

Typically, it takes a few months to regain full movement in your thumb.
