The second kind, calledendogenous Cushings, happens when the body itself is producing too much cortisol.
Its not clear how many people get Cushings from their medication.
[Exogenous Cushings] is not super rareits very common.
By comparison, about two to eight people per million develop endogenous Cushings.
Cortisol is an important hormone that regulates the bodys response to stress.
However, chronic excess of cortisol is very, very harmful to a persons body, Abreu Metzger said.
What Are the Signs of Cushings?
About 70% of patients will experience recent weight gain.
Most of these symptoms are seen in some proportions in the general population.
There are some more specific clinical features, and there are some that are very frequent but nonspecific.
Amy Schumer got the diagnosis pretty early on.
How Is Cushings Diagnosed?
Endogenous Cushings is one of the most challenging diagnoses in endocrinology, Abreu Metzger said.
Most peoples cortisol dips at night and then increases in the morning.
Some people may also have to get anMRIor aCT scanto see if their adrenal or pituitary glands are compromised.
How Is Cushings Treated?
Treating endogenous Cushings often requires intensive interventions.
However, Fleseriu said its not always as simple as cutting out the steroid.
It has to be specified that the only one that doesnt need specific treatment is the exogenous Cushings.
Taking steroids for a long time can cause the pituitary gland to stop producing cortisol.
After stopping the medication, some comorbidities may improve.
But for some people, the physical symptoms of Cushings syndrome remain despite their bodies not producing any cortisol.
Endogenous Cushings syndrome is rare, and most patients wont have it.
