Increased pressure from the clogged vein causes blood to back up into nearby tissues.
A blood clot within aleg or arm arterycan also occur.
The limb is deprived of oxygen-rich blood, which causes deep, cramping muscle pain.
The chest pain associated with a heart attack is often crushing or tightening and doesn’t improve with rest.
Shortness of Breath
Like chest pain, shortness of breathdyspneacan occur with either apulmonary embolismorheart attack.
With a pulmonary embolism, the dyspnea tends to come on suddenly.
Racing Heart
Aracing or fast heartbeatis a common symptom in individuals withpulmonary embolism.
Light-headedness results when blood clots restrict blood flow to critical organs like the lungs, heart, and brain.
In severe cases, a loss of consciousness (syncope) may occur.
SVT is classically seen in females withvaricose veins.
It is also common after insertion of an intravenous (IV) line.
Unfortunately, detecting a DVT in the leg through symptoms alone is notably inaccurate.
For one, symptoms are absent in about half of individuals with a DVT.
A blood clot forms if a plaque breaks open, blocking blood flow through an artery.
Lungs
Apulmonary embolismoccurs when a blood clot lodges or gets stuck within an artery in the lung.
Left undiagnosed and/or untreated, a PE is potentially fatal.
These arteries come together at the base of the brain to form thecircle of Willis.
Symptoms may include:
Abdomen
Blood clots can form within veins or arteries located in the gut.
A blood clot within a kidney vein is calledrenal vein thrombosis.
Left untreated, blood clots can cause serious, if not fatal, complications.
Blood clots cannot be diagnosed or managed at home.
Providersdetect blood clotsusing imaging studies, like an ultrasound orangiogram.
However, in some cases, blood clots develop even when the blood vessel is not damaged.
A healthcare provider must assess all suspected blood clots.
If diagnosed, blood clots require medical care.
